Write a very short story about an animal--a dog, cat, or parrot, say--that is used to spending time around humans. Let this pet observe, with familiarity yet bafflement, the way males and females of this other species interact. The animal cannot understand much of our language, so its observations will have to be based on physical behavior and gestures. But it could still be an intelligent observer with its own built in biases and clarities humans are incapable of. A caged animal would have a different perspective than an animal free to roam.
The exercise is from the book 'The 3 A.M. Epiphany'
Perched at the top of the tallest pine tree, the crow looked down on the park. Movement on the right attracted her eye. She looked to see two humans walking by and the crow, having seen the park filled with these beings, swooped down for a closer look. She landed a few feet in front of them eyeing their hands. They often dropped food on the ground that she and the other crows would fight over. But she was the only one around this time so any food they dropped would be all hers. They werent carrying anything edible that she could see. Disappointed she got ready to fly back up to her favorite perch but at that moment one of the humans pulled something out of the sack it was carrying. The crow could tell by the fact that it brought the object to its mouth that it was food.
She watched as the humans stopped walking and laid down a blanket. The human with strange long feathers on its head continued to pull food out of its sack arranging it on the ground. The crow hopped a little closer watching it intently. The other human also had strange feathers on its head but these were much shorter. The long feathered human called to the short feathered human with harsh noises the crow was used to hearing but did not understand.
The crow knew that she had to wait until the humans were distracted before she could swoop in and grab a piece of food. She liked that they were picking pieces out and placing them on plates because it made it easier for her to grab. The long feathered human looked up at her and did something weird with its face. She knew from experience that this was a good thing and could mean food. She hopped closer keeping one eye on the human. It kept doing the weird thing with its face except now it was making a strange noise too. The crow also recognized this sound and knew it most certainly meant the human was going to throw her some food.
And just as the crow expected the long feathered human threw her some food. She picked at with her beak. When she was finished she looked back up at the humans. The long feathered and short feathered human were doing the weird thing with their faces at each other and suddenly they smooshed their faces together. She watched this with crowish amusement cataloging it into her memory of weird things humans do. The crow then realized that this was the perfect moment to swipe some food. She flew up into the air, swung around in a wide arc, and dived down toward the distracted humans. As she approached the food she adjusted her wings and body so that she would fly over the ground. She was able to grab a beakfull of the stuff the long haired human threw at her previously and triumphantly she flew back up to her perch on top of the tallest pine tree. The beings sure did strange things but as long as they provided food she would let them hang around her territory.
